Can Shopify Replace Your Magento Store’s Custom Features and Functionality?

Simplifying doesn’t mean sacrificing what your business needs. It means keeping the capabilities that matter and finding a more dependable way to support them.

You’ve spent years making Magento work for your business. Custom features, extensions and integrations all have a job to do. Migrating to Shopify might promise a simpler way to run things, but there’s a reasonable question: can it actually do everything we need?

A simpler store is only useful if it can support the business. Before you move, you need to understand what carries across, what needs a different approach and what deserves a closer look.

‍

‍

Can Shopify replace your Magento functionality?

In most cases, yes. Shopify can support a wide range of Magento requirements through existing features, apps, integrations and custom development. But before deciding on a solution, two questions need answering:

  1. Should it be migrated? Does the functionality still provide value to your customers or team?
  2. How should it be implemented? What is the most reliable, manageable way to support that required functionality on Shopify?

The first question helps define what’s worth keeping. The second helps avoid carrying unnecessary complexity into the new store.

‍

What should you leave behind?

Some Magento features remain essential. Others are outdated workarounds, rarely used extensions or tools that duplicate something elsewhere.

Ask who uses each feature, what value it provides and what would happen without it. That helps you carry across what matters and leave unnecessary complexity behind.

Common challenges we’ve solved on Shopify

Some requirements can feel like reasons to stay with Magento. They’re also things we’ve solved on Shopify, from customer-specific pricing for Pet Health Club and volume discounts for SiteTuff to delivery rules for Westend DJ.

Common requirements include:

  • Product configuration: bundles, personalised products or options that affect pricing and availability.
  • Pricing and promotions: customer-specific prices, volume discounts or rules that combine several conditions.
  • Delivery: cut-off times, postcode restrictions, weekend surcharges or products that need special handling.
  • Business systems: connections to stock management, fulfilment, accounting and other operational tools.
  • Trade accounts: customer approvals, payment terms and different buying experiences for wholesale customers.

These requirements don’t all need the same solution. The detail matters: who qualifies for a price, how a discount applies, or what happens when an order misses a delivery cut-off. The real question is how to support them reliably, at a sensible cost, without making the new store harder to manage.

How Magento functionality translates to Shopify

The right solution needs to work for the people running your store, with manageable costs and dependable support long after launch.

Magento extensions don’t transfer directly into Shopify. The requirement behind each one needs an appropriate solution, and that may be simpler than what you have today.

There are four main routes:

  • Existing functionality: Shopify or a suitable theme may already support what you need.
  • Apps: a specialist app can provide additional functionality without building it from scratch.
  • Integrations: connect Shopify to the systems your business already uses for stock, fulfilment, accounting or other operations.
  • Custom development: build a tailored solution where existing options don’t meet the requirement properly.

The right approach depends on more than whether something is technically possible. Your team needs to manage it, the ongoing costs need to make sense, and someone needs to support it.

An app might be the right answer. So might a small piece of custom development. The value is in choosing an approach that fits the business and remains dependable after launch.

What this looked like for Pet Health Club's migration to Shopify

When we migrated Pet Health Club to Shopify, membership discounts needed to work across checkout and recurring subscription orders. Although they were migrating from Kentico, the challenges they needed solving are similar to Magento brands with customer-specific pricing tied to external systems.

We built a custom app that connected to their existing systems and kept membership eligibility up to date. A custom Shopify Function applied the discount for eligible members at checkout, while an integration with Recharge carried those discounts through to recurring orders.

The requirement was straightforward to describe. Making it dependable meant connecting membership data, checkout and subscriptions so they worked together.

Bringing it together: Westend DJ’s move from Magento

For Westend DJ, moving to Shopify Plus meant supporting a large catalogue alongside the practical requirements of selling and delivering specialist DJ equipment.

We started with a workshop to understand what the business needed and where the existing store was causing friction. A suitable base theme provided useful functionality from the outset, with selected apps, integrations and bespoke development addressing the remaining requirements.

These included delivery cut-off times, postcode restrictions, weekend surcharges, pre-orders, custom bundles and stock notifications.

The project shows how those approaches come together in a Magento migration. Each requirement needed a suitable solution, without assuming everything had to be rebuilt from scratch.

How our experience helps you make the right call

Experience helps us spot the questions worth asking early, while there’s still time to test assumptions and change direction.

Knowing which questions to ask makes a difference. Across migrations and custom Shopify projects, we’ve learned where apparently straightforward requirements can hide more complicated dependencies. Experience helps us recognise those details early and focus the investigation where it matters. We work through real scenarios with your team to establish:

  • How it will work: demonstrating or prototyping critical functionality where needed.
  • What needs to change: including any differences for customers or your team.
  • What it will cost to run: from app fees to maintenance and support.
  • Where the trade-offs sit: so you can make an informed decision.

Our audit starts that conversation. Where requirements need closer investigation, a discovery workshop gives us room to test assumptions and define the approach before you commit to the migration.

Frequently asked questions

It should be investigated early. A workshop or prototype can help establish whether there’s a workable alternative, what would need to change and whether the trade-offs are acceptable. If Shopify can’t support something essential within a sensible budget, that needs to inform the platform decision.

Compare how closely each option meets the requirement, how straightforward it is to manage and what it will cost to maintain. An app may provide a supported solution quickly. Custom development may make sense where the requirement is unusual or existing tools introduce awkward compromises.

Often, yes, through an existing connector or a custom integration. The important questions are what data needs to move, which system controls it and how failures are handled. A connection needs to support your day-to-day operations reliably.

Not necessarily. Some requirements can be supported on other Shopify plans, while others depend on capabilities available through Plus. Your pricing, checkout, B2B and operational requirements should guide the recommendation, rather than assuming a highly customised Magento store automatically needs Shopify Plus.

Magento extensions can’t be installed directly on Shopify. Instead, we assess what each extension does and how that requirement should be supported. Some may be covered by Shopify or your chosen theme; others may need an app, integration or tailored solution.

Many requirements can be supported on Shopify, but they may work differently. The first step is to identify what your business needs to retain, then assess the right combination of existing features, apps, integrations and custom development. Critical requirements should be validated before you commit.
